First Annual New In SA 2022 concert was a success!

As a Composers Alliance of San Antonio (CASA) member I was thrilled to help coordinate this year’s first ever Student Composer Competition and collaboration with the USAF Band of the West. Congrats to all involved!

Compositions

Someone wrote about this piece that they, “enjoyed the deft atmospheric and textural bows to Debussy…all done while maintaining the melodic and harmonic integrity of original ideas”. That sums it up well. This piece is a musical portrait of my 9 yr old daughter, the girl with the flaxen hair.
This is a contrapuntal setting of the opening phrase of Veni Veni Emmanual in the 2-part Invention tradition of late-Baroque Era composition. Perhaps this will lead to a collection of 12 Well Tempered Carols.
Grey Clouds for solo piano
A musical setting of Ray G Dandridge’s poem
A contemplative poem by Ray G Dandridge about Spring
A new work for big band, based on the civil rights song of the same title, shedding light on the ongoing travesty of human trafficking.
Commissioned and recorded by the Air Force Band of the West.
A work for saxophone quartet inspired from the Kant’s Critique of Judgement, the agitational sublime and Graham’s Wind in the Wiillows.
A work for solo flute and electronics inspired by the ascetic practice of Los Penitentes and their worship songs, known as, alabados.
This work was inspired by the “Great American Eclipse” of 2017…hence the title. It is in a three part form with jazz and early 20th century harmonic and melodic influences.
Polytonal triadic progressions grapple with heraldic melodic lines in waves of frenetic energy. Premiered and conducted by Mark Camphouse.
A work inspired by Afanasyev‘s collection of Russian Folk Tales.

Music Performance and Jazz Education

A in-depth analysis lesson for the Texas Music Educators’ Association All State Jazz Piano Etude 1.
An arrangement of the patriotic hymn by Katharine Bates and Samuel Ward.
Performance on harpsichord at the San Antonio Museum of Art of a work by Nathan Felix.

Curriculum in Higher Education

A panel discussion I moderated for the CMS 2021 Conference. A wonderfully diverse and interdisciplinary panel representing university music program Deans, international performers and military band commanders were excited to discuss ways to meet student needs for the 21st century careers.
A panel discussion for which I was the coordinator and moderator that looked at ways the USAF Band of the West mitigated risk and brought innovation to their mission through the initial pandemic year.

Film Music

Film score for the Story Behind NORAD. Features astronaut Scott Kelly, aired on PBS nationwide.
A short film from director Josh Videna that I scored, it is a fun story with Jackie Chan homages throughout.
A beautiful animated film I scored for the Hamlisch Film Scoring Contest.
A music score for the cinematography reel of Andrew Jorgenson.
An inspiring young woman film director and friend Alaa Zabara will have her film Selahy featured in Geena Davis’s Bentonville Film Festival. I loved writing the score for the film and being part of this emotional film which was premiered in Jordan.
This masterpiece by film director/visionary Jean Renoir retells the H.C. Anderson fairytale using a beautiful array of filmic approaches to give moments of heart aching realism to breathtaking fantasy. My film score tries to create a musical accompaniment that is both classic and timeless.
Pathos and longing pervade my film score for the Independent short film about a troubled boxer by director Reinaldo Arzola.
